Overview

Nonadherence to iron chelation therapy is an increasing concern in patients with thalassaemia. Poor adherence to iron chelation therapy is associated with poor survival rates. Measures should be taken to reduce nonadherence to treatment, which may in turn lead to chronic complications. Using appropriate counselling techniques, healthcare professionals (HCPs) could identify patients’ concerns and develop practical strategies to overcome possible barriers to adherence.
