About this course

Diabetes is a chronic condition characterised by elevated blood glucose levels resulting from defects in insulin production, action or both. This module, presented by Dr Peter Julian and Dr Gary Deed, delineates the critical role of pharmacists in diabetes management, offering insights into therapeutic options, patient counselling, and lifestyle modifications essential for effective diabetes control. It also discusses the management of chronic kidney disease (CKD), a key complication of diabetes, emphasising the need for comprehensive care and the pivotal role of pharmacists in patient education and support.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this module, you should be able to:

  • Understand the classification, prevalence and pathophysiology of diabetes
  • Identify non-modifiable and modifiable risk factors for type 2 diabetes (T2D)
  • Understand the various classes of anti-diabetic medications (mechanism of action, therapeutic considerations, and common side effects) for effective management of T2D
  • Recognise the importance of glycaemic control through assessment of glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) and blood glucose monitoring
  • Comprehend the pathophysiology, risk factors and management strategies of CKD, highlighting the critical role of pharmacists in patient care and education
