Overview

About this course

Optimal blood health is crucial in maintaining physiological activities and organ system interactions. When blood fails, numerous bodily processes are compromised and health complications ensue. Anaemia is the most common consequence of blood failure with iron deficiency as a major cause. Symptomatic iron deficiency can occur way before the onset of anaemia. Thus, early screening and correction of iron deficiency can prevent anaemia and the need for blood transfusions.

ID and IDA management involves oral and intravenous iron therapy. Treatment depends on the urgency to correct the anaemia and the tolerability to oral iron.

This e-learning module guides the primary care physician in comprehending the essentials of the evaluation and management of anaemia, iron deficiency, and iron deficiency anaemia.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning module, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize the importance of blood health.
  • Define and differentiate anaemia, iron deficiency (ID), and iron deficiency anaemia (IDA).
  • Describe the risks associated with ID and anaemia.
  • Perform timely screening and correction of ID to prevent its progression into anaemia and avoid the need for blood transfusion.
  • Identify the risks and complications of blood transfusion.
