Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is associated with the progressive degeneration of the macula. The degeneration has resulted in visual impairment or blindness that limits the daily activities. Several  pharmacological approaches such as supplements, 5-hydroxytryptamine1A (5-HT1A) agonists, visual cycle modulators, inflammatory modulators, neuroprotective agents and angiogenesis agents are currently being investigated. The early detection of risk factors is pivotal to delay the onset of AMD and prevent the disease progression.
