Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is one of the most common chronic diseases in childhood worldwide; three quarters of T1DM cases are diagnosed in children or adolescents. It is widely known that T1DM is caused by autoimmune destruction of the beta islet cells in the pancreas which is responsible for the production of insulin. Patients with T1DM also suffer similar signs and symptoms to that of patients with T2DM. Apart from medications, self-management of diabetes is the centre of T1DM management. It is important to educate the patient and their carers on self-management of diabetes based on diet, exercise, lifestyle, identifying signs and symptoms of complications, self-monitoring of blood glucose and administration of insulin to achieve optimal outcomes and reduced complications.
