Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD; UK: GORD) is one of the most common complaints encountered in the primary care setting. GERD is defined by consensus as symptoms resulting from the reflux of gastric contents into the oesophagus, the oral cavity, and/or the lungs. Patients presenting with symptoms suggestive of GERD should be assessed for the type of symptoms, frequency and exacerbating factors. Appropriate drug therapy should be recommended according to a patient’s presentation. Patients with alarming or atypical symptoms should be referred to a clinician.
