Headaches can be classified as primary or secondary. Primary headache disorders implies no secondary or underlying cause, and include tension-type headache (TTH), migraine and cluster headache. TTH, previously known as tension or muscle contraction headache, is the most common type of primary headache worldwide. TTH can usually be well managed with over-the-counter analgesics as they are rarely serious. It is essential to also identify patients at risk of medication overuse headache and the signs and symptoms that prompt referral.
