Overview
Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), such as urgency, frequency, nocturia, incomplete urination, and weak urinary stream are common manifestations of benign prostatic enlargement (BPE) in men. Identification of BPE with concomitant symptoms of LUTS classify the patient as having benign prostatic obstruction (BPO). If left untreated, such symptoms can have a negative impact on quality of life and may lead to complications such as urinary retention, renal insufficiency, and cystolithiasis. This e-learning module summarizes the symptoms of BPO, the ancillary diagnostics necessary, and the non-surgical management options per symptom.
